Abstract

In the case of permanent night work, i.e., permanent shift work at night, well-founded fears of considerable disadvantages are opposed to other views. This article is based on a comprehensive literature search and a broad discussion in the Working Time Society [Arbeitszeitgesellschaft]. We present experts’ consensual theses on the effects of permanent night work and on the need for research. The core result of the discussion is that permanent night work is problematic in most cases, but there are also constellations in which permanent night work is less problematic or even has positive effects on some people. There is a considerable need for research in order to gain a clear picture here.
