Until the 1980s, the focus of inequality research was on employment. Subsequently, the focus increasingly shifted to inequalities that go far beyond the realm of employment. These are referred to as new social inequalities. The article answers the question of why attention to the new social inequalities has grown and how they can be empirically investigated. It becomes clear that approaches to the study of old and new inequalities do not contradict each other but complement each other.
